Before Your Appointment

The Day Before

  • Get a good night's sleep — being well-rested helps your body handle the session
  • Stay hydrated — drink plenty of water
  • Avoid alcohol and blood thinners for at least 24 hours
  • Moisturize the area to be tattooed (but not the day of)

Day Of Your Appointment

  • Eat a solid meal 1-2 hours before — don't come hungry
  • Shower and clean the area to be tattooed
  • Wear comfortable, loose clothing that allows easy access to the tattoo area
  • Bring snacks and water for longer sessions
  • Bring headphones or entertainment if desired
  • Arrive on time — late arrivals may need to reschedule

What to Avoid

  • No alcohol or drugs — they thin your blood and affect healing
  • No aspirin or ibuprofen (Tylenol is okay)
  • No sunburn on the area — reschedule if burned
  • No lotions, oils, or numbing creams unless discussed beforehand

Aftercare Instructions

First 24 Hours

  • Leave the bandage on for 2-4 hours (or as directed)
  • Wash gently with lukewarm water and unscented soap
  • Pat dry with a clean paper towel — don't rub
  • Apply a thin layer of unscented moisturizer or aftercare ointment
  • Don't re-bandage unless instructed

First 2 Weeks

  • Wash 2-3 times daily with unscented soap
  • Apply thin layer of unscented lotion after each wash
  • Don't scratch or pick at scabs — let them fall off naturally
  • Avoid soaking: no swimming, baths, or hot tubs
  • Avoid direct sunlight on the tattoo
  • Wear loose, breathable clothing over the area

Healing Timeline

  • Days 1-3: Redness, swelling, and oozing are normal
  • Days 4-7: Peeling and flaking begins — don't pick!
  • Weeks 2-3: Itching is normal as skin heals
  • Weeks 4-6: Surface healing complete, deeper layers still healing
  • 3+ Months: Fully healed — now protect it from sun damage

Warning Signs

Contact your artist or a doctor if you experience:

  • Excessive redness spreading beyond the tattoo
  • Pus or discharge (clear lymph fluid is normal)
  • Fever or chills
  • Red streaks extending from the tattoo
  • Severe pain after the first few days

Long-Term Care

Once healed, your tattoo is permanent but still needs care:

  • Sunscreen: Always apply SPF 30+ to prevent fading
  • Moisturize: Keep your skin healthy to maintain vibrancy
  • Touch-ups: Some fading is normal — touch-ups are available
